Did you know that English mathematician Charles Dodgson met a little girl named Alice and her sister on a boat ride. To entertain them as they floated down the river he told them a whimsical story, which he later published under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.
Why did Carroll use a pseudonym?
He was an instructor at Oxford University who values his privacy. He would even refuse letters sent to Lewis Carroll, claiming no such person lived there! He did use his pen name when needed occasionally and with children, who he loved and felt most at ease with.
Lewis’ father was also a math teacher at Oxford until he married his cousin and was forced to resign. They went on to have 11 children.
Lewis had a stuttering problem was bullied in school for it and was quite sickly for much of his life.
