The Many Talents and Charms of Professor Chewbacca

I recently discovered Lynda Barry, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also known as “Professor Chewbacca”, and “The Near Sighted Monkey”. Clearly she is prone to making fun of everything. And I mean everything, including herself. Her lessons look like she and her students must have a riot!

Professor Barry has her own Wikipedia entry from which the above photo of her is taken:

Lynda Barry: Self Portrait

Lynda Barry was actually a long-time artist, author and comedian before she became a Professor at UW-Madison. Imagine that! Having a Professor who is a stand up comedian. Each lesson could have them rolling the aisles. What a wonderful way to learn. I imagine her students can’t wait to get to class.

I want to draw your attention to the massive amount of teaching material that Lynda Barry has available on-line. Her teaching materials are definitely not “Fluff”. They are full of “Stuff”. First I want to draw your attention to this article on her course “The Unthinkable Mind”:

Next I suggest another course she offers: Making Comics”:

Another interesting article has Lynda Barry teaching her class how to draw Batman comics. One of the assignments is to draw a picture of Batman in 15 seconds! Here is her guidance for how to accomplish this feat in 10 easy(?) steps:

Find the Batman article here:

As you graze through the massive amount of material here you should note that Lynda Barry has lots of her class materials available for free, on Tumblr. She has also published books available on Amazon which contain her teaching materials:
